Saving Money

E-mail Print PDF

Me and Anna sat down at the begining of janaury to discuss bills.  Bills always are a pain but in january you always feel that extra punch from christmas.  So we went throw all our bills and started to look at what we really need and what we dont need.

We came to cable(shaw).  We were paying almost $100 dollars a month for Shaw cable.  Now recently the Shaw cable company and local tv were both putting out ads saying that the other one was ripping them off.  I really dont like it when a company gets greedy.

Now both of them were saying that the other one was not paying any money or was going to increase our cost in services.  I think they are both full of shit!  I think a well managed local tv station would make billions of dollars and millions in profits if they did it properly.  Advertisement is on of the easiest ways to make income.  The Shaw cable company I think is just plain out greedy!  So with that being said we took that hundread dollars and kept it in our bank account.  Thats right we canceled our Shaw cable.  The best part is we still watch tv anytime we want.  How do we do this?  Well it's simple really...go to global tv and check out there video page.  Every episode of all there shows are right there.  It is the same for every other channel too.  You just go to there website and watch it from there website.  There news is usually updated a hour after there brodcast and there shows the same thing.  So you might have to watch everything an hour later, but for saving $100 dollars a month...I think it is well worth the wait.  So we found cable for free.

I know what your asking why the hell would anyone want to watch tv off a desktop or notebook.  Well you dont.  With the tv's now days and the newer video cards for your computer you can plug in your computer to your tv.  The best part of this is you can watch tv on your own television and still use your computer to do what ever you want.  The tv will just act like an extension to your desktop. With wireless mouses and keyboards now and how small they can come it will almost be like having a clicker, you could even do it from the couch still.(I still prefer to sit at the desk to run the tv though) So there we have it.  $100 dollars savings and you get to tell the greedy companys to STFU!(If you dont know what that means use your imagination in a negative way....cheers!)

So we deleted $100 dollars off our bills.  That is huge!  Now because we were already on this internet kick I asked anna what about the phone?  There is all these commercials about cheap phones using voip(voice over Internet Protocal which basically means using your internet to talk)  Now I have been using voip since the early 2001/02.  So I knew that there was nothing wrong with using that.  Actually if I was smart I would have invested my money way back then into there companys as everyone is going voip.  So i looked up all these companys on the internet and found really cheap plans for 5.99, 4.99,3.99,2.99 I even found one for 99 cents a month.  Then I came accross Magic Jack. It had a month free offer.  So I found my trial company.  We got the jack with in five days and pluged it in.  Now the only bad part about magic jack is that they only offer 604 numbers at this time.  They told me that they will have the 250 numbers soon.  So with that said I took a 604 number.  What the hell do i care I am now paying 87 cents a month for my phone.  I have caller id, voice mail, call waiting...ect I have all the goodies I had from telus but it costs me 87cents??????????  WTF!  I was paying $75 dollars and magic jack charges me 87 cents?  Who do you want for your phone company?  So my wife called telus and told them we were canceling there phone of coarse they wanted to know what rate we were getting and who we were going threw.  My wife wouldnt give them information but they did lower our internet service to $20 dollars a month so they could keep that service.  My wife is such a SCAMER. hehehe

So there we have it.  We sat down to think about how we are going to try to save maybe $20-$30 dollars off our bills and we end up saving $175 dollars a month.  Thats $2100 a year that you could put down on your morgage or in a investment of some type for the future.  So hopfully some of you will be able to benifet from this and save money.

Now our next lesson is how to rewire your house to your neighbours house so you dont have to pay an electric bill....IM KIDDING! lol

Thanks for taking the time to read Rant & Raves.
